How can young people use artificial intelligence to solve the challenges of a green and sustainable future that we encounter every day? This was the final task of an international training, where groups of young people from Slovenia, Greece, Lithuania, Serbia, and Spain developed their own ideas. With the help of AI tools, we created prototypes of web applications – from finding green spaces and supporting health to promoting sustainable mobility and strengthening social connections. These are truly innovative ideas with real-life application potential.
During the last two days, we applied the knowledge gained in the first three days of tackling various environmental and sustainability challenges to the final and most complex task of the week. Each group selected a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and designed a project along with a prototype product to support or represent that goal. All web applications were created using BASE44, an AI-powered tool for developing applications.
We were divided into four international groups. The first group developed an application that allows residents of the coastal city of Huelva (Spain), where the training took place, to find and explore green areas. Within the app, users can also explore flora and fauna through dedicated tools and navigate green spaces in their local environment.
The solution is adaptable to any city. Users can interact with an AI-powered assistant to learn about the importance of green spaces and sustainable development goals, while also earning points through activities such as reporting illegal dumping sites or engaging with others.
This app encourages citizens to use green spaces responsibly and promotes environmental protection. Its key advantage is scalability – it can be applied in different cities and environments. It contributes to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
The second group developed Unspiked, an application designed for people with insulin resistance. It enables meal planning and provides tailored recipes. The app connects to a glucose monitoring sensor worn on the arm, displaying and analyzing data within the platform.
An AI Coach supports users by tracking their progress and needs. The app also includes personalized physical activity recommendations. It is highly comprehensive and supports both prevention and management of health conditions, acting as a monitoring and support tool for users.
The third group addressed air pollution, focusing on the situation in Belgrade. Their key question was how individuals can reduce transport-related emissions. They developed an app supporting greener mobility choices.
The app suggests alternative and optimized routes, helping reduce air pollution. It also includes a motivational system that rewards users for environmentally friendly behavior. AI is integrated as a support tool, helping users find the most efficient and sustainable solutions.
The fourth group focused on well-being and social inclusion, particularly during the transition period after completing studies. Their app aims to connect individuals with like-minded people through social networking.
The symbol of the app is a puzzle piece finding its match – representing how the app connects compatible individuals. Users first interact with an AI system, complete a short questionnaire, and are then matched with others based on similarities.
AI analyzes communication patterns and user characteristics to create meaningful connections. If a match does not feel right, users can continue searching.
All the concepts and solutions developed during the training are relevant and applicable in today’s world. They emphasize sustainability and aim to improve quality of life.
The greatest value of this experience was the opportunity to design our own ideas and projects. With this knowledge, we feel more confident engaging in real-world challenges and bringing our ideas to life. As young people, we can actively contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and shaping a more sustainable future.
